I highly recommend to use the original and unmodified air filter housing with an normal air filter (no K&N or other "sport air filter" or something that can be cleaned regularly or have to be impregnated). Only with these original parts you can be sure it harmonizes with the VRIS system and gives you an optimal cylinder charging and best possible combustion.
The worst idea ever is to use an open air filter which gets hot air from inside the engine bay, resulting in really bad cylinder charging, combustion, emissions, power and fuel consumption.
If you use an open air filter (what I never would recommend), you absolutely need such a CAI to get cold air. Problem: CAI has to intake only cold air preferably far away from cooler or engine, but the air filter must be protected from getting wet.
However, CAI in combination with the original air filter housing is useless.
